This thread is to gauge opinion within the club to see if there are people interested in this type of modification.
Back in the 1960's you could buy either a Roots or Shorrocks supercharger for a number of cars, the Alpine among them. I have never seen this within the club but it was a contemporary modification.
Today because of fuel cell technology superchargers are once again being produced. I have purchased one for my Morris Traveller , which I will report on in due course.
The possibility exists to fit an Eaton MP45 unit employing an HIF 44 SU carb. This will produce a 40% increase in h.p. at the rear wheels or about 50% at the flywheel. It will take the Alpine into Tiger country and with a bog standard engine to boot. At light throttle openings a bypass valve lets the mixture into the manifold without boost to aid economy. At heavier throttle openings the mixtiure is fed into the compressor chamber where it will be boosted at pressures up to 8 p.s.i
The blower will be driven from a modern serpentine multi ribbed belt and tensioner and matching pulley system. It will be necessary to have an alternator conversion to withstand the extra belt tension.
Any comments on whether you think a conversion like this is worthwhile will be most appreciated since although it is not a commercial venture at this point, the set up costs would be more than I could bear alone .
Since the Tiger had the same brakes as an Alpine, no other mods would seem to be necessary beyond Spax gas shockers and metric calipers.
The cost of the kit would be about £2800 at today's prices but if you were thinking of tuning your engine this is pretty competitive since Twin DCOE's and a suitable manifold alone would be about £1000 and you would need a gas flowed head and warmed up cam etc, etc, bored block, hepolite pistons to add to that.
The great advantage of this set up is torque , torque and more torque, ie a hugely satisfying power curve but without the uncertainty of losing out at the bottom end of the rev scale. Superchargers do grunt big time.
