|
|
Hi All,
Is there anybody in the Heathrow/Surrey/Thames valley/South Bucks area that has a heavy duty Hub puller suitable for Alpine rear hubs, That I can borrow, Please? ........ Im getting a bit desperate as my series 3 has managed to destroy 2 'universal' type pullers already and shows no sign of releasing its nearside rear hub, so that I can change the oil seal.
Thanks, Mick.

Thought id better mention that i,ve seen the previous post's on this subject (Rich Mac July 12th and Chris Barker February 28th) but thought that I would try the easier option of hub removal before resorting to half shaft removal etc etc. The Offiside one came of no problem with my four legged puller but the Nearside one has mullered it.
Thanks, Mick. |

If you find one, please let me know! I'm in a similar situation and as such my car is undrivable!
Cheers

I would support the idea of the Club acquiring one or more of the proper pullers - but I haven't seen one in years.
In the meantime, there's nothing to add to the earlier thread posts.
It's safer and not a big deal to remove the whole assembly and take it to somone who has a press, takes care, and has heat. _________________ Chris Barker

Oh! there is just one thing to add. If you have this trouble with a Model T Ford - which also has a key and taper - it often helps to slacken the nut (no more than a turn) and drive in 1st and reverse with some vigour in tight circles. When you hear 'clonks', it's come free.
But I have never tried it with an Alpine. _________________ Chris Barker

There has been some progression with this. I have a fabricator/engineer making a bespoke puller as we speak. When it arrives (middle of next week, if the postal strike doesn't ...er....strike!!!) My serIII will give it a thorough acceptance test and I will report back if its any good.
If not I could resort to driving around with the nuts loose, and dont think for a moment I hadn't already considered that option. (just after the second puller disintegrated) Thanks for the suggestion anyway Chris.
Watch this space, Mick. |

The puller arrived today, and what a fine tool it is.
Custom made for the job and has released the hubs from my car with ease.

Mick - will the puller fit wire wheels too? I believe the original Rootes one had a set of adapters to fit over the wire wheel hubs, so did you have these made as well?
Regards

This puller was made to remove "standard" hubs as thats what I have (It simply bolts to the four existing wheel studs) I'm not sure how wire wheels are fitted to the hubs but I guess if an adapter was made for the original puller then it could be made for this one? I have a Workshop manual that (I think) has pictures of wire wheel hubs so will have a look and let you know.
Thanks, Mick.

Does your car have wire wheels or "Standard" ones

Hi Mick,
Sadly I have wire wheels - for some reason I thought you did too as I didn't think removing four-stud hubs posed that much of a problem - I stand corrected on that front! Oh well, back to the drawing board I guess. Doesn't look like I'll be driving my car again soon. Haven't used it since March because of this problem. Unfortunately my garage isn't big enough to allow me to remove the drivshaft as a whole and take it somewhere to have the hub pressed off. I really regret buying my car now. I've had it 18 months and so far only driven it on a dozen or so occassions.

Mick's puller will work but you need 4 long bolts (7/16 UNF I think) or threaded rod and spacer tubes so that it can be bolted to the brake-drum attachment holes. It may need a longer 'extractor' bolt too. _________________ Chris Barker

Hi Nick,
Don't give up on your car yet, I'm sure we can sort something out. As Chris suggests an adapter can be made to make my puller fit wires. Leave it with me for a while so that I can find out more about this. If the puller can be adapted, I am more than happy to come over to Aldershot and pull your hubs. It may not be for a few weeks tho, as i'm currently recovering from surgery on my knee. You will not be disapointed when you get your car sorted. I've had my serIII for less than six months and i'm completely sold on it.
Regards, Mick. |

Thanks Mick! Anything you can do to help would be great! I was really looking forward to getting my Alpine 18 months ago, but so far it's just been one big dissapointment. I've been doing an interior rebuild for the past few months, but my enthusiam has now dried up. Doesn't really matter at the moment anyway as I wouldn't be driving it this weather! _________________ 1963 Sunbeam Alpine S3
