There are some fairly useful pictures in the Alpine Guide. These came from Pressed Steel Fisher and are isometric views of various parts and structural assemblies.
I offer three basic suggestions:
1. make sure the body is properly supported in the shape you want it to finish - door gaps especially.
2. carefully remove metal/rust so you get to understand how it all fits and what you need to put back. In addition to the outer sill and the inner vertical sill, there is another heavy-gauge intermediate sill. Unlike the outer one, this goes the full length, so is inside the bottoms of the front and rear wings.
3. do make sure that the rear inner wheel arch and the bits that join it to the sill are restored.
And MIG is by far the easiest way to weld. _________________ Chris Barker

Yes. I think those pics were aquired later than the first issue and went in with the Issue 2 update in 1993.
Jerome has the updated version, but I don't know if he has just the amendment any more. It was a while back! _________________ Chris Barker

Hi all. Just started my passenger side sill because it's the worse side, It's not the most amount of rust that ever fell out of a sill ,but it favverd it, just abit gutted at the moment, the previous botch up consists of pop riveted metal a lot of resin and filler. How bad could it get?.... Ah well it's going to be challenging but i intend to photo it all and present it to you all as i go, not because i know what i am doing but because there is not alot of information on this topic. I have a realy good example of a car in need of sills Ian Only registered users can see links on this forum! Register or Login on forum! |

Hi Ian, know where your coming from, my outer sill (rotten) was brazed on. Where it couldn't be brazed it was filled!(neither suitable for MOT). I got 1 1/2 carrier bags of rust from 1 side - can you beat this? |

I work in aerospace, so I got some one to copy one I bought on ebay in thicker steel. I only did one side but I think the other side is comming close to being done. May be next spring, if I get a mig plant for xmas! Iused an arc welder before and it was a bit of a pain. |

Hi ian, its not that your replacement sill too short - it looks like it's been badly repaired in the past. What you are actually missing is the wing bottom. I'm in the midst of doing the same repair myself, would recommend getting the 'lower wing' repair panel. I managed to get a cheap one via Only registered users can see links on this forum! Dont know if this has worked but if you can see the pic - Icut a piece out of a spare sill to mate with the lower wing. I also had to cut a piece to extend the wheel arch. I think I'v some left, I'll dig it outif you want. |
