My back box is giving up after 24 years! not bad for mild steel.
Any one make it with the chrome tailpipe?
When I refit I will try & cure the chassis banging, engine (side) mountings are fine, among my spares I have a rear engine mounting...is there such a thing? 7 should I try fitting it as the real banging takes place on start up as it seems the engine moves about as the @@@@ Strombergs try to work!!

Most people fit stainless steel - which can be polished. Or you might find a chrome 'tailpipe trim' to fit over the outlet.
The rear mounts are actually to the gearbox, from its crossmember.
Unless the mounts (front or rear) actually look bad - swollen or unbonded rubber, I would be very surprised if they are the real cause of the exhaust knocking. The system is a real puzzle which requires very careful adjustment, especially where it passes through the centre of the cruciform, but also at all places where it goes close to things over the rear axle. Be aware that when it gets very hot, it expands and the Y piece moves down. And when the engine reacts to torque, it also moves. Best thing is to loosen every joint from the rear of the Y piece aft, and then rotate each part, and/or move it back or fwd until there is a gap of at least 1/2" everywhere. You should also be able to find witness marks if it is as bad as you say. Alpine engines almost always rock a little at idle, but poorly set-up Strombergs could be worse than normal. Anyway, a properly adjusted exhaust will allow for reasonable movement.
